It is the sad fate of most art to be in storage. Or as mine is doing, causing claustrophobia in my office. It’s shocking to get out of art school and no one knows who TF you’re talking about, ever. I love seeing how this project was made and thought through, one of my favorite bits of the internet is having a new relationship with art pieces from the inside. Or like looking behind the TV and actually finding the little people in the show.
I live in a small town in Denmark that has a sculpture club that displays sculpture all over our little town - like an outdoor gallery. The sculptures are for sale and they change once a year (some stay, some go). It would be awesome to have Eleven Heavy Things here in a little town called Give. :-)
i loved this so much when it was in union square park; in fact, the above photo of the two men at the table is mine — i was so honored to be included in your monograph
Re: levitation. I used to have regular dreams about levitating and then gliding for an entire city block -- as if riding an invisible hover board. Even upon waking in the middle of the night, I was convinced that I was capable of this sorcery and that I would try it in the morning. However, I never tested my powers as I didn't want to destroy the illusion that I could defy gravity. It was a strangely empowering time in my REM adventures.
I have levitation dreams too, and I take them as a sign that I am happy. The feeling in the dream is one of total ease. A bounce here, a whoosh there, an ability to move quickly and without impediments. Maybe it means: you are on the right track.
Absolutely wonderful work, Miranda! I didn’t know about this work previously - so happy you shared it. Will always admire the relationship between humor and honesty in your work!
This was how I learned about you! These sculptures were at the fashion design center on Venice Blvd in LA and I was blown away by how cool it was. I found your blog (? Was that it? This was pre-insta) and have been a fan ever since.
i saw and “played” on these in venice! it was my first interaction with your work and i loved discovering them (was the sculpture park set up behind a building/out of the way?!) and you. so many vivid fond memories, but sadly (or not) no pictures.
It reminds me a little or your Learning To Love You More project/website. That’s when I first learned about your work and I was obsessed with the website for a little while (I had just graduated from the art academy at the time and was clueless about my next steps and how to relate to the art world, so it showed me an alternative way to think about (making) art). Your instinct to collaborate with your audience and build community really comes through with many of your projects. Small acts of rebellion and redefining different media through your unique voice… it’s very inspiring. I feel like a traveller in time crossing roads with your writing and art every now and then.
Call myself ‘a whore for…’ constantly and get the strangest looks. Thank you for sharing, I love! Would love to interact with these pieces. We have lots of room here in Australia 😉
These are so fun. I love your brain.
